Manaslu Circuit Trek 2025/2026 – Permits, Seasons & Smart Planning

Table of Contents

A hidden gem in the Himalayas, the Manaslu Circuit Trek circles the world’s 8th highest mountain, offering dramatic landscapes, cultural depth, and thrilling high-altitude passes. However, because this trek passes through restricted territory near the Tibetan border, proper permits and strategic planning are essential. This comprehensive guide explains everything from permit requirements and seasonal considerations to logistics and cost breakdowns to help you trek confidently.

Why Permits Are Required

The Manaslu region is a politically sensitive and environmentally protected zone. Permits ensure the conservation of natural habitats, support local infrastructure, and monitor foreign visitors for security reasons. Solo trekking is not allowed in this area; all travelers must be in a group of at least two people, accompanied by a registered guide through a government-authorized trekking agency.

Permits Required for Manaslu Circuit Trek

To legally trek the Manaslu Circuit, you need three primary permits:

  • Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Required from Jagat to Dharapani, which falls under the restricted zone. Cost: $100 for the first 7 days (Sept–Nov); $75 for the rest of the year. Each additional day costs $15 (peak) or $10 (off-peak).
  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): Required for trekking through the conservation zone. Cost: $30 (flat fee).
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Necessary once you cross into the Annapurna region after Larkya La Pass. Cost: $30 (flat fee).
  • Additional permits may be needed if you plan to extend your route into Tsum Valley or specific rural municipalities:
  • Tsum Valley RAP: $40 to $70 depending on season and duration.
  • Chumnubri Rural Municipality Permit: $15 for foreigners.

Documents Needed

To obtain the above permits, trekkers must submit:

  • A valid passport (6+ months before expiration)
  • 2-4 passport-sized photographs
  • Copy of Nepal visa
  • Travel insurance with high-altitude rescue coverage
  • Itinerary details and agency confirmation letter

All permit applications are submitted by the trekking agency, not individuals.

How to Apply for Permits

Permits must be secured through a licensed trekking agency. Once you've chosen your agency, provide them with all required documents and pay the fees. The agency submits the applications to the Nepal Tourism Board or Department of Immigration. Permits are typically ready within 1–2 working days.

Cost Summary

Here is a rough estimate for the total permit cost:

  • RAP (7 days): $100 (peak) or $75 (off-peak)
  • Extra days (7-14): $15/day (peak) or $10/day (off-peak)
  • MCAP: $30
  • ACAP: $30
  • Municipality permit (if needed): $15

Total estimated cost: $220–$280 depending on the season and duration of the trek.

Additional costs include guide and agency fees which typically range between $110 and $160.

Best Time to Trek the Manaslu Circuit

Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the best seasons to trek the Manaslu Circuit. The weather is stable, the skies are clear, and the rhododendron forests are in full bloom. Temperatures are moderate, and the trail is lively but not overcrowded. April and May are especially favorable for crossing Larkya La Pass.

Autumn (September to November)

Another ideal season, autumn offers the clearest skies and most stable weather conditions. The post-monsoon atmosphere means lush landscapes and excellent visibility. However, it's also the most popular time, so expect more trekkers along the route.

Winter (December to February)

Winter brings fewer crowds but also more challenges. Temperatures can drop significantly, especially at higher elevations, and Larkya La Pass may be snow-covered or even closed. Only experienced trekkers with proper gear should attempt the circuit in winter.

Monsoon (June to August)

Monsoon season is the least recommended time due to heavy rainfall, leeches, slippery trails, and the risk of landslides. However, the landscape is lush and green for those who don’t mind the rain and are prepared for the challenges.

What to Expect in Each Season

  • Spring: Flowering forests, moderate temperatures, and excellent trekking conditions.
  • Autumn: Crisp air, golden fields, and high visibility.
  • Winter: Snowy trails, minimal traffic, and challenging weather.
  • Monsoon: Green landscapes, muddy paths, and fewer tourists.
