Overview And Highlights

Upper Dolpo Trekking is a challenging but rewarding experience, one that takes trekkers through some of the most pristine and awe-inspiring landscapes in the world.

Upper Dolpo is a hidden valley located in the Himalayas of Nepal and is said to be one of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions on earth. Trekking through Upper Dolpo provides visitors with stunning views of the Himalayas, as well as an opportunity to experience the local culture and traditional way of life.

The trek is located in the remote region of Far West of Nepal with one of the recent popular trekking destinations of Nepal, Shey Phoksundo National Park. Likewise, it lies at the north of the Dhaulagiri Range along the Tibetan borders.

Similarly, the Upper Dolpo Trekking can take you at a maximum elevation of 4,530 meters to 5,115 meters. As the trek lies in one of the remote areas of Nepal, this trek is considered one of the longer treks in Nepal requiring 20 days to complete the complete trek.

However, the major rewards you will receive with the trek are to experience the ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, old monasteries, Lake Phoksundo, wildlife, and nature.

Upper Dolpo Five High Pass Trek

This trek is one of the five passes adventure treks in Nepal, Nangdalo La Pass (5,350 m), Sela (Gelu) La (5,094m), Mo La Pass ( 5,027m), Jungben La (5,550m), during the 23 days Dolpo circuit.

Throughout the journey, you will have to cross Five different challenging high passes over 5,000m and three moderate-high passes, Nangdalo Pass (5,350m), Sela (Gela) La Pass (5,094m), Mo La Pass (5,027m), Niwar Pass (5,110m), Jungen La Pass (5,550m) and three lower passes are Khoma Pass ( 4,660m), Shimen Pass (4,260m), Bhima Lojun La Pass (4,460m).  Similarly, multiple nights would be inside the camp above 3,500 meters.

Upper Dolpo Trekking Route

One of the famous rising treks of Nepal, the Upper Dolpo Trekking Route starts from Juphal in the Dolpo district and the first step begins by traveling to Nepalgunj which can be reached by flight or road.

If you choose to fly towards Nepalgunj, you can again have a flight towards Juphal and begin your trek from Day 1. This trekking route is unlike any other trekking route in Nepal as usually other routes include dense forest while Dolpo provides a different landscape with the remote region, untouched cultures, and vegetation.

Permits and Regulations for Upper Dolpo Trek

Upper Dolpo Trek is a strictly protected area that requires an expensive permit to enter. Likewise, you will also require a permit for lower Dolpo.

This trek was opened for tourists only in 1989 as the region was a restricted area and belonged to the Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Similarly, there are several types of permits to trek in Upper Dolpo such as Lower Dolpo

Restricted Area Entry Permit, Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit, and Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Entry Permit.

Talking about the permit cost, these three restricted are:

Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Entry Permit: USD 20 Per Person Per Week

Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit: USD 30 Per Person

Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Entry Permit: USD 500 Per Person for 10 days

Best Season of Trekking

As the trek lies in a rural area with very limited facilities and hotels, the best time for trekking is during Spring (April to May) and Autumn fall (October to November).

There is very little chance that you can plan and execute your Upper Dolpo trek during winter as the trekking routes will be completely covered by snow.

Also, due to fewer facilities for that reason, trekking in winter will be close to impossible.

Accommodation and Meals

Hoping to get deluxe accommodation and good meals during this trek will be a big mistake as due to the harsh landscape and tough trail, transportation of food and other supplies is not often.

However, you will find some basic lodges and teahouses along the trek where you will be provided with their local foods and sleep in their traditional house.

Therefore, it is advised to carry food and other essential supplies during the trek and adapt yourself to rest on their local accommodation until the trek continues.

Additional Information

Nepal has four climatic seasons Spring:

Spring: March-May

March/April/May months are called the spring season which is the best for holidays in most of the Himalayas of Nepal. The sky and the weather are very clear and sunny in these months and warmer. The weather forecast will be 20 to 25 degrees till 3,500m during the daytime. And at night time and in the morning will be colder. But above the 4,500m will be -10 to -15 degrees cold in the morning and at night. Some time will be rainfall in these months. This is the best season for blooming the rhododendron flower in the mountain which is our national flower. There will be many different kinds of natural flora and fauna in the mountain which makes this season beautiful and attractive for tourists in mountains. The tourist comes for trekking/peak climbing and expedition during this season. This is one of the perfect seasons to visit the Nepal Mountains to see and take the experience of walking and climbing mountains.

Summer: June – August

We called the monsoon months June/July August because of the heavy rainfall in Nepal. Mostly July/August and till mid-September. It’s still possible to do the trek in Mid-June which isn’t heavy rain yet. During the monsoon time is difficult to do the trek in the mountains and the sky and the weather aren’t visible and difficult to walk during the heavy rain and scare with flooding. Mostly, It’s difficult to do the trek in the Everest region because the flight is not on time. Sometimes, It will take a few days long wait to fly Lukla or long waiting to fly to Kathmandu where lots of chances of missing an international flight. So, During these months, It’s idle to choose dry places for trekking in Nepal, Upper Mustang Trek, and Upper Dolpo Trek. These are the recommended trekking for holidays by Peace Nepal Treks (p Ltd and also we provide the best services for our customers.

Autumn: September – November

Mid-September to Mid December is the best season for mountain holidays in Nepal where ever can choose the mountain as your timing frame and budget. We have many different kinds of trekking/peak climbing and Expedition services packages for you. This is one of the most outstanding seasons with a beautiful clear sky and the temperatures will be moderate. These months are the feast and festival times when the biggest Dashain festival/Tihar festival and Chhad festival fall. And also have a long holiday from the government and people have time to visit shortly in holidays and to meet friends and relatives around. There is no heavy long rainfall but there is a clear sunny day and warmer on these days. So for it, Nepalese people also visit for short holidays around and the International people come for trekking and peak climbing expedition for long or short holidays. Most of the popular trekking regions will be full of trekkers and quite busy times. Like, mostly busier trekking regions will be the Annapurna region/Everest region and the Langtang region. But there are several less crowded trekking holiday places in Nepal, such as the Manaslu circuit trek, Tsum Valley Trek, Upper Dolpo Trek, Mustang Trek, Naar Phu Trek, etc.

Winter: December – February

December to February is the winter season in Nepal. This season isn’t idle to visit long trekking high altitude trek. This is the season of snowfall in the mountain region above the 4,500m and the temperature will be -30 degrees below which is too frozen the people of hotel lodges also not staying these months in the higher mountain and they moved to a nearby city or in Kathmandu or in Pokhara. So these months are good to visit a short trekking route for a week or 10 days only around Kathmandu city, Ghorepani poon hill, Nagarkot visit, Chitwan National Park, Bardia National Park, Pokhara city or staying at a local village homestay, etc. But the sunrise and sunset will be very visible and attractive these months. So the short best trekking is good to visit in Nepal.

While there are no seasonal constraints on traveling to Nepal, different trekking regions are best visited in different seasons. Once you inquire about any trekking itinerary we’ll email you regarding the best season for that particular trek. Nepal for all seasons.
