This program would give you the invaluable opportunity to experience teaching and living in a rural village in Nepal. Thulo Parsel is located in the Kavre district which is about 5-6 hours from Kathmandu by bus. It is a beautiful, peaceful village nestled in the mountains with a large river running through it. Its people are from the Tamang ethnic group, a group of mixed castes and religions including, but not limited to, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity. In this village, you would be working with teachers and students to share ideas about education and your teaching methods and pedagogy. In particular, your role would be to help students become more active participants in the classroom by extending their learning beyond the textbook and into the real world.
In Nepal, school runs from Sunday to Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, with Saturday off. There are four schools in the village – 3 Lower Secondary Schools (Year 1 – Year 8) and 1 Higher Secondary School (Year 1 – Year 12). You would have the option of working in either Primary or Secondary levels. Additionally, you have the option of teaching for as long as you choose with a minimum of two weeks. You will predominantly be teaching English and will be placed in a school with other pre-service teachers.
You have the option to stay in homestay or camping accommodation. All of your meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided. Here, you get the chance to eat the local food or you would also be welcome to cook your own. This will cost you a maximum of 2000 Nepalese Rupees (or $25) per day for meals and accommodation. Camping, however, maybe a slightly more expensive option.
