The Bardia National Park, covering an area of 968 sq km is the largest among the national parks in the Terai region of Nepal. It was more popularly known as the Royal Bardia Wildlife Reserve before being renamed. The national park which is situated in Western Terai is a haven for Tigers and the famous one-horned rhinoceros.
What’s there:
The Bardia National Park boasts the greatest number of deer in Nepal. Six unique types of deer are found in this region; the Chittal which has white spots on its body, the Hog deer which is smaller than the Chittal but looks similar, the Sambhar which is the largest deer in the Indian subcontinent, and the Swamp Deer or Barasingha which is the smallest among its family. Apart from deer, the national park is also home to the last known herds of wild elephants in South Asia, the one-horned rhinoceros, and 407 species of birds.
