until we reach Namche after a long pull up a ridge.
Namche is the main Sherpa village and here we'll have
a rest for the evening and enjoy an afternoon walking
around the village.
Day 13 / Namche Bazaar
Acclimatization
We remain at Namche for a second night to allow for
proper acclimatization to the altitude. Namche is a
prosperous village, situated in a large, protected hollow.
It gained its importance during the period when Tibetan
salt was traded for the lowland grains of Nepal. Today
a limited amount of trade exists at Namche and Tibetans
are often seen in the village trading rugs and Chinese-made
goods, clothing, salt and dried meat.
It is recommended that you take the
opportunity to see both the sunrise and sunset views
from the National Park Headquarters above the village.
The view is stunning a superb panorama of the Khumbu
peaks with great views of Everest. After breakfast,
a variety of options exists; perhaps a walk towards
Thami (3810m) above the beautiful Bhote Khola river
valley or a visit to the National Park Headquarters
to see the interesting displays of Sherpa lifestyle
and culture. There is also a mountaineering display
and details of the park’s flora and fauna. Your
guides will be on hand to offer advice and escort you
on your walks.
Day 14: Namche
Bazar - Thyangboche 3 To 4 Hrs. (3867m)
From Namche, we climb towards the park headquarters
and follow a contouring trail high above the Dudh Kosi
River. Above Namche the route to Thyangboche becomes
visible with the monastery seen below the summit of
Everest and surrounded by Himalayan peaks. On today’s
walk there are opportunities to spot the local wildlife,
including the beautiful Danphe Pheasant often seen among
the birch and silver fir forest between Shanasa and
Trashinga, and Himalayan Thar on the high ground above
the trail. After reaching the re-forestation nursery
at Trashinga, the trail drops steeply to cross the Dudh
Kosi at Phunkitenga (3250m), where we take lunch. In
the afternoon we pass water-driven prayer wheels and
ascend, initially steeply, through pine, fir, black
juniper and rhododendron forest towards Thyangboche.
The monastery and our lodge are located in a beautiful
meadow surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks in a truly
peaceful and tranquil setting. The most notable peaks
seen from here are Kantega, Ama Dablam (perhaps the
most beautiful peak in the region), and of course Mount
Everest.
Day 15: Thyangboche

After an early breakfast, we tour the largest and most
important monastery in the region, Thangboche. Following
the Imja Khola we go through Pangboche and over a short
hill to the small village of Periche.
Day 16: Feriche
- Lobuche 4 To 5 Hrs. (4930m)
we traverse around the flanks of Lobuje Peak, bearing
left into the upper Khumbu valley. After a steep ascent,
we gain the main Everest trail and the village of Lobuje.
After our journey over the Cho La, it will seem very
busy here! Time: 4 hours.
Day 17: Labuche
- Gorak Shep (5160m) (3 To 4 Hrs.) Kala Patar 2 Hrs.
(5545m)
About 3 hours beyond Lobuje we reach Gorak Shep, the
site of the 1953 expedition's base camp. An evening
ascent of Kala Pattar (5,545m/18,188ft) is highly recommended
for hopefully a sunset view of Everest. The climb takes
about 2 hours and can be hard work, but the effort is
rewarded by the classic view of Everest and the Khumbu
Icefall, as well as Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori immediately
above.
Day 18: Gorak Shep - Everest Base Camp Back To Gorak
Shep - 4 Hrs.
Today as you walk you can see the icy-glacial pond and
icebergs down below of Khumbu glacier. The walk brings
you to Gorakshep which has two teahouses and was base
camp for the early 50's expedition to Mt. Everest. At
the top of Kalapatthar the view is beyond imagination
and Everest looks within a stones throw. The panoramic
view from this spot makes the hard climb feel worthwhile.
Descend for the overnight camp at Labuche..
Day 19: Gorak Shep
- Pheriche 3 Hrs. (4593m)
We retrace our steps to Lobuje, and
keep going down the Khumbu valley. Passing the snout
of the Khumbu Glacier, we reach a line of memorials
to Sherpas who have died on Everest. With the stunning
peak of Ama Dablam in the background, we pass the small
settlement of Dugla, and continue to Pheriche. This
is a large village with many tea-houses, and the home
of a Himalayan Rescue Association hospital. The hospital
always welcome donations and have Tee Shirts to sell.
Time: 6 hours.
Day 20: Pheriche to Thyangboche
Following the main Everest trail down the beautifully
scenic valley, we pass through Pangboche and re-cross
the river before climbing to the famous monastery at
Thyangboche. It now has a brand new monastery, the largest
in the area, as the old one was destroyed by fire a
few years ago. Built in the traditional style, with
its gleaming copper roofs, it is as grand as ever.
Day 21: Trek
to Namche Bazaar
A steep descent of around 1500ft/500m leads through
bird filled rhododendron bushes and fir trees to the
Dudh Kosi River. Crossing this on yet another suspension
bridge, we climb up the opposite side of the valley
to reach the contouring path leading back to Namche
Bazaar. Namche is the perfect place to enjoy some well-deserved
celebrations!
Day 22: Trek
to Lukla
A steep descent for 600m/2,000ft leads to the suspension
bridge crossing the Dudh Kosi river. We cross the river
twice more before a rising traverse up the hill-side,
past numerous tea-houses to Lukla.
Day 23: Lukla- Kathmandu.
An early morning flight takes us back to Kathmandu,
and gives us a last view of the mountains we have just
spent two weeks exploring.
Day 24: At Leisure in Kathmandu.
