| They are Chtiwan’s largest animal,
with fully grown adults weighing up to 6 tonnes. Once
common in the Terai, wild elephants are now a rare sigh,
with only a few small groups remaining in southern border
areas of Nepal.
Even so elephants play an integral part in the life
of any visitors visiting Machan Wildlife Resort, for
the Resort maintains a corps of eight domesticated and
trained animals, which are in action every day of the
tourist season, ferrying people across the river to
the resort or moving gently through the grasslands and
jungle on game-spotting safaris. They live in a compound
of their own a couple of minutes’ walk from the
resort and a visit to their lines is a highlight of
every visitors stay.
